This paper reports development of a two-dimensional solver for compressible viscous flow using spectral difference (SD) method and its applications on simulating laminar flow past two side-by-side cylinders at various spacings. The high-order spectral difference solver is based on unstructured quadrilateral grids. High-order curved wall boundary representation is developed for cylinders. Nine different spacings (center-to-center distance/diameter s = 1.1, 1.4, 1.5, 1.7, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.4 and 4) are investigated. The simulation results are compared to experimental results and other numerical results. As s increases, single bluffbody, flip-flopping, anti-symmetric and symmetric wake patterns are predicted. Numerical investigations of separation-induced transition on high-lift low-pressure turbine using RANS and LES methods

At low Reynolds numbers, laminar-turbulent transition occurs on the suction side of high-lift low-pressure turbine blades. The prediction of this flow is an important step in low-pressure turbine design. Thus the laminar-turbulent transition must be modeled or resolved. The flow around the high-lift low-pressure turbine blade T106C is predicted using RANS simulations, without and with transitio...

Numerical Simulation of Separation Bubble on Elliptic Cylinders Using Three-equation k-? Turbulence Model

Occurrence of laminar separation bubbles on solid walls of an elliptic cylinder has been simulated using a recently developed transitional model for boundary layer flows. Computational method is based on the solution of the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations and the eddy-viscosity concept. Transitional model tries to simulate streamwise fluctuations, induced by freestream turbulen...

Numerical simulation of transient natural gas flow in pipelines using high order DG-ADER scheme

To increase the numerical accuracy in solving engineering problems, either conventional methods on a fine grid or methods with a high order of accuracy on a coarse grid can be used. In the present research, the second approach is utilized and the arbitrary high order Discontinues Galerkin Arbitrary DERivative (DG-ADER) method is applied to analyze the transient isothermal flow of natural gas th...

3D Flapping Wing Simulation with High Order Spectral Difference Method on Deformable Mesh

In this paper we carry out computational studies of three-dimensional flow over flapping wings. The problems we have investigated include, firstly, three-dimensonal simulation of flow over an extruded SD7003 airfoil in plunging motion at transitional Reynolds number and, secondly, flow over a pair of flapping rectangle wings with constant NACA0012 cross-sectional airfoil profile at low Reynolds...

Numerical Simulation of Kinetic Effects in Low-density Hypersonic Aerodynamics

The Direct Simulation Monte-Carlo technique (DSMC) is used for numerical analysis of rarefied-gas hypersonic flows near a blunt plate, wedge, two side-by-side plates and cylinders, sphere, torus, and rotating cylinder. Important kinetic effects that are specific for the transition flow regime have been found: nonmonotonic lift of plates, strong repulsive force between side-by-side plates and cy...
